The 110-metre superyacht Kaos drew attention as it cruised past Camp de Mar, in the south-west of Mallorca, accompanied by its sporty tender, Open T-Shirt.
The owner
Kaos belongs to Nancy Walton Laurie, the daughter of Bud Walton, who co-founded the US retail giant Walmart with his brother Sam. She is one of the wealthiest people in the world and is known for her philanthropy, particularly in education.
A Dutch-built giant
The yacht was built by the Dutch shipyard Oceanco and launched in 2017 under the name Jubilee, reportedly for an owner from Qatar. At the time, it was the largest yacht ever built in the Netherlands. The exterior was designed by Igor Lobanov and the interiors by Sam Sorgiovanni. Walton Laurie later bought the yacht and renamed it Kaos.
On board
- Space for up to 31 guests in 15 cabins, looked after by a crew of around 45.
- A helipad with refuelling facilities.
- A swimming pool, spa, hammam and steam room.
- A gym, cinema and beach club, and a lift between decks.
Powered by twin MTU diesel engines, it has a top speed of around 19 knots and a range of about 5,300 nautical miles, enough to cross the Atlantic.
A target for protest
In July 2023, Kaos made headlines when climate activists sprayed paint on its hull while it was moored in the marina in Ibiza, in a protest against the environmental impact of the very rich. The paint was later removed.
Superyacht season
Every summer, the waters around Mallorca and Ibiza host some of the largest private yachts in the world, attracted by the islands’ marinas, coves and specialist repair yards. Palma in particular has become one of the Mediterranean’s main hubs for superyacht refits, an industry that supports thousands of jobs on the island.
At the same time, the presence of giant yachts has become part of the wider debate in the Balearics about luxury tourism, emissions and the gap between visitors and residents.
