Aldi's latest special buy is a €26.99 slushie machine

The Ambiano machine goes on sale in Spanish stores from 1 July, with a 1.2-litre jug and two crushing settings.

Aldi is selling a slushie machine in its Spanish stores this summer, one of the latest items in its rotating range of non-food special buys.

The Ambiano machine goes on sale from Wednesday 1 July at €26.99. As with other special buys, stock is limited and the supermarket has not said whether it will be restocked once it sells out.

What you get

  • a 1.2-litre jug, enough for several drinks at once;
  • a 30-watt motor that crushes standard ice cubes of around 2 cm;
  • a stainless steel blade;
  • two settings: a coarse crush for a granita-style slush and a fine crush for smoother drinks;
  • a compact body that fits on a kitchen worktop and can be put away in a cupboard.

The machine is electric, so the ice is crushed at the press of a button rather than by hand.

What it can be used for

With temperatures in the Balearics regularly above 30°C in July and August, crushed ice is in constant demand. The machine can be used to make slushies with fruit juice or syrup, frappés, smoothies and cocktails, or simply to produce crushed ice to keep drinks, fruit or seafood cold at a barbecue.

Tips for using it

  • Use ice cubes close to the recommended 2 cm size; larger cubes strain the motor.
  • Choose the coarse setting for slush drinks and the fine setting for blended drinks.
  • Rinse the jug and blade after every use and dry the steel parts to prevent marks.
  • Store it somewhere dry when it is not in use.

Where to buy it

The slushie machine is sold in Aldi stores across Spain, including those on Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza. Special-buy items are distributed in limited quantities and often sell out within days, so anyone who wants one is advised to go early in the week it goes on sale.

At under €30, it is aimed at families looking for an inexpensive way to make cold drinks at home during the summer, rather than at anyone wanting a commercial-grade machine.
