Aldi launches €6.49 anti-theft bags in Spain to beat summer pickpockets

The bum bag and two shoulder bags have an RFID-blocking pocket, cut-resistant fabric and lockable zips, and go on sale on 20 June.

Aldi is adding a set of anti-theft bags to its Spanish stores this summer, aimed at holidaymakers and residents who spend time in crowded places where pickpockets operate.

The bags go on sale on Saturday 20 June as part of the supermarket’s “Live in Style” range, at €6.49 each, and will be available while stocks last.

Three shapes, two colours

Shoppers can choose between:

  • a bum bag, worn around the waist or across the body;
  • a horizontal shoulder bag;
  • a vertical shoulder bag.

Each comes in pink or navy blue. At that price they are clearly pitched as a cheap extra for the beach, markets, festivals and public transport rather than an everyday handbag.

How they protect your valuables

The bags have three security features designed to deal with the most common tricks used by thieves:

RFID-blocking pocket. An inner compartment is lined to stop radio-frequency signals, so contactless bank cards, ID cards and travel passes cannot be read by someone holding a skimming device close to you.

Cut-resistant material. The outer fabric is reinforced so it is harder to slash with a blade, a method used to get into a bag without opening it.

Lockable zips. A small carabiner clips the zip pulls together, so the bag cannot be opened with one quick movement in a crowd.

Why it matters in the Balearics

Pickpocketing is a familiar problem in busy parts of Palma, at popular markets and on crowded buses during the summer season, and police in tourist areas regularly issue warnings about distraction thefts. A bag that keeps cards shielded and zips locked will not stop every thief, but it makes a quick theft more difficult.

Getting the most from an anti-theft bag

  • Wear it in front of you, with the RFID pocket against your body.
  • Clip the zips together whenever you are in a crowd, not only when you remember.
  • Keep cards and phone in separate compartments so a single grab does not take everything.
  • Check seams and straps from time to time, since a worn strap is the weak point of any bag.

As with other items in Aldi’s weekly non-food offers, stock is limited and varies from store to store, so popular colours may sell out early.
