Brazil v Norway: Vinícius and Haaland, two leaders born nine days apart

Brazil have never beaten Norway, and the round-of-16 tie at MetLife Stadium pits two very different stars against each other.

Brazil face Norway at MetLife Stadium in the round of 16 of the World Cup, in a match that brings together two of the most influential attacking players of their generation: Vinícius Júnior and Erling Haaland.

Same generation, different styles

The two were born just nine days apart — Vinícius on 12 July 2000 and Haaland on 21 July 2000 — but they lead their teams in very different ways.

Vinícius: the all-round creator

Vinícius has been Brazil’s main attacking threat at this World Cup, with four goals and an assist in four matches, carrying the side when key players such as Raphinha and Neymar were unavailable. He has learned to tune out provocation from rivals and crowds and focus on his game.

His maturity has been noticed in the dressing room. Captain Marquinhos says Vinícius now genuinely “takes the reins” of the team. The forward has also spoken emotionally about his roots in São Gonçalo, where he grew up living with his grandmother until he was 16.

Haaland: the pure finisher

Haaland’s role is simpler and deadly: wait for the ball in the box and finish. At his first World Cup, he has scored five goals in four matches. His international record — around 60 goals in 53 appearances for Norway — is extraordinary.

Sport runs in the family. His father, Alf-Inge Haaland, played for Norway at the 1994 World Cup, and his mother, Gry Marita Braut, was a national champion heptathlete.

A surprising record

Despite their five world titles, Brazil have never beaten Norway. In four meetings, Norway have won twice and drawn twice. The most famous of those games came at the 1998 World Cup in France, when Norway came from behind after a Bebeto goal to win 2–1 and qualify for the knockout stage.

What to expect

  • Vinícius is likely to start wide and drift inside, creating chances and trying to lift the team with his dribbling.
  • Haaland will stay central, waiting for service and the chance to strike.

Brazil will expect to win, but Norway, with a striker capable of turning a game with a single chance, have every reason to believe they can extend that unbeaten run.
