Aldi has opened its first supermarket on Playa de Palma’s famous party strip, known to German visitors as the “Ballermann”. The store opened on 28 January at Carretera Militar 199 in s’Arenal.
The store
The supermarket is spread over two floors connected by an outdoor escalator. It stocks around 400 fresh products, including fruit, vegetables, meat and fish, as well as Aldi’s usual range of groceries.
There is also an “El Bazar de ALDI” section with changing offers on household goods, decoration and DIY, refreshed every Wednesday and Saturday. The opening came with special promotions.
The store has created 13 jobs.
Local products
Aldi says it works with around 20 local producers who supply about 50 products from the Balearic Islands. They include wines from Mallorcan wineries such as Pere Seda and Macià Batle, and products from the Binissalem designation of origin.
Most of the range is made up of Aldi’s own brands, and the company says the majority of its products are sourced in Spain.
Aldi in the Balearics
The s’Arenal store is Aldi’s 17th in the Balearic Islands, 14 of them in Mallorca, and the company employs more than 260 people in the region. Across Spain, it has nearly 500 supermarkets.
Why it matters
The Playa de Palma area has a large resident population as well as huge numbers of visitors in summer, and the arrival of a discount supermarket gives both a cheaper alternative to the small convenience stores along the seafront. Discount chains have expanded rapidly in the Balearics in recent years as rising living costs push residents to look for lower prices.
