Hestia Menorca's long road trip: a season on the move

With Bintalfa unavailable for weeks, the Menorcan club faces a run of away games that could define its season.

Hestia Menorca is about to spend a long stretch of the season living out of a suitcase. With the Bintalfa pavilion unavailable for several weeks, the club faces a run of away fixtures that will test the squad’s endurance as much as its basketball.

The schedule

The trip begins with a Balearic derby in Palma against Fibwi Mallorca, followed by visits to Alicante and Estudiantes. After a brief break, the team will be back on the road for Fuenlabrada and Zamora. By the time Menorca returns to Bintalfa, around round 24 of the season, its prospects should be much clearer.

Lessons from Obradoiro

The team’s most recent game, a 100–86 defeat at Obradoiro, offered both encouragement and warning. Menorca showed that it can compete for 40 minutes on a difficult court, but the statistics revealed clear problems:

  • it was outrebounded by 15;
  • it gave away 36 free throws;
  • it allowed its opponents 23 assists.

Those numbers will need to improve on the road.

Opponent by opponent

Fibwi Mallorca. The derby is always intense. The Palma side plays a fast, aggressive style, forcing turnovers and thriving in chaotic games, so Menorca will need composure as much as energy.

Alicante and Estudiantes. Two very different challenges, but both demanding. By this point of the season, every team knows its opponents well, and games are decided by details.

Fuenlabrada and Zamora. The final legs of the trip, when fatigue may become a factor.

The island factor

For a team based on an island, every away game means flights rather than a bus journey. That brings early starts, connections, hotel nights and less time for training and recovery. These costs don’t show up in the box score, but they affect performance over weeks.

The real question

Menorca has already shown that it can win away from home. The question is whether it can keep its level up through a long sequence of trips. One good road win is welcome; a string of them could push the team towards the play-off places. A bad run could leave it looking over its shoulder instead.

Either way, this stretch is likely to define the ceiling of the team’s season.
