Ibiza’s Can Misses stadium will host Spain’s under-21 team on 6 October for a European Championship qualifier against Romania. The match was announced by Ibiza’s mayor, Rafael Triguero, during a celebration for the island’s local champions.
The match
The game is matchday 13 of qualifying for the Under-21 European Championship. Spain, coached by David Gordo, go into it top of their group with 21 points, five clear of Finland.
Why it matters
The fixture is Spain’s last in the qualifying campaign before next year’s finals, which will be held in Albania and Serbia. A win would secure first place in the group and send the team into the tournament on a high.
Ibiza and the national teams
The last time a Spanish national team played at Can Misses was on 11 April 2023, when the senior women’s team beat China 3–0. A few days earlier, the women’s side had also beaten Norway 4–2 at another stadium on the island, in front of more than 2,000 spectators.
A night for local fans
International football is a rare event in the Pitiusas, and the visit of “La Rojita” — as the under-21 side is known — gives local fans the chance to see some of the players who could make up the senior squad in the years ahead. Many of today’s Spain internationals came through the under-21 team.
The opponent
Romania have a strong tradition in youth football and reached the semi-finals of the Under-21 European Championship in 2019, so the visit is far from a formality, even with Spain already well placed in the group.
Practical information
Ticketing details are expected to be announced closer to the date. Fans travelling to the stadium are advised to arrive early, as parking around Can Misses is limited on match days, and to check for any changes to bus services in Ibiza town.
