Great Wall Motor (GWM), one of China’s largest carmakers, has delivered its first shipment of 500 vehicles for the Spanish market to the Port of Barcelona. From there, cars will be distributed across the mainland and to the Balearic Islands, including Mallorca.
Why Barcelona
GWM chose Barcelona for its position as a logistics hub for southern Europe and its strong shipping connections, which make it easy to supply both the mainland and the islands.
The ORA 5
The headline model in the shipment is the GWM ORA 5, a compact SUV designed with European drivers in mind, which will be one of the brand’s first models in Spanish showrooms.
The ORA 5 follows GWM’s “multi-energy” strategy, with a choice of powertrains:
- petrol;
- hybrid;
- fully electric.
That approach allows buyers to choose according to their needs and budget, at a time when many drivers are not yet ready to switch to a fully electric car.
Equipment
Like many Chinese cars arriving in Europe, the ORA 5 is designed to compete on equipment, with:
- a digital instrument panel;
- a touchscreen infotainment system with smartphone integration;
- driver assistance systems such as lane-keeping assist and automatic emergency braking;
- practical cargo space.
More models to come
GWM plans to introduce further models during the year, including SUVs of different sizes, pick-ups and off-road vehicles with four-wheel drive.
The Chinese wave
GWM joins a growing list of Chinese brands entering the Spanish market, including MG, BYD, Omoda, Jaecoo and others, which have rapidly gained market share by offering well-equipped cars at competitive prices. The EU has imposed additional tariffs on Chinese-made electric cars, which is one reason many Chinese manufacturers are offering hybrid and combustion versions alongside electric ones.
For buyers in the Balearics, where most journeys are short and electric charging infrastructure is expanding, the arrival of more affordable electric and hybrid options could accelerate the shift away from conventional cars — although island buyers should check the availability of dealerships and servicing locally before committing to a new brand.
