McDonald’s has opened a restaurant in Can Picafort, the holiday resort on Mallorca’s north-east coast, bringing the number of its outlets on the island to 13.
The restaurant opened on Thursday 18 June on the Artà–Alcúdia road, at number 92, and the company says it will create around 30 local jobs.
What the new restaurant offers
The Can Picafort outlet follows the chain’s current format, with:
- a McDrive drive-through lane;
- an outdoor terrace;
- a children’s play area;
- table service;
- self-service digital ordering screens;
- a McCafé counter for coffee and desserts;
- charging points at the tables;
- “Order and Pay” through the MyMcDonald’s app, with collection at the counter, at the table or at the drive-through.
Who is behind it
The restaurant is run under franchise by Lucyna Maestre, who said she and her team wanted it to become a meeting place for local families as well as for visitors, and to give a boost to the area.
McDonald’s Spain’s director of restaurants, Ángel Castillo, described the opening as a sign of the company’s commitment to the Balearic Islands, where it already has 25 restaurants, 13 of them on Mallorca. He said the company works with a sustainable model that creates jobs and adds value locally.
A resort that is growing
Can Picafort, in the municipality of Santa Margalida, is one of the busiest beach resorts on the Bay of Alcúdia in summer, popular with German, British and Spanish families. Until now, visitors wanting a McDonald’s had to travel to Alcúdia or further afield.
The arrival of a big international chain is a mixed blessing for some in the resort. It brings year-round jobs, which are welcome in an area where much of the work is seasonal, but local restaurateurs have long argued that Mallorca’s coastal towns should protect their independent businesses.
For holidaymakers, the drive-through location on the main coast road means the restaurant is easy to reach by car from Can Picafort, Muro and Son Serra de Marina.
