A heatwave from the solstice
Aemet says temperatures will meet the criteria for a heatwave from 21 June — the summer solstice — making it the first official heatwave of the year.
Staying safe
- Drink water regularly, especially if you are outdoors.
- Wear light, loose clothing and a hat.
- Use sun cream of SPF 30 or more and reapply every two hours.
- Plan outdoor activities for early morning or evening.
- Rest in the shade or in air-conditioned places.
- Watch for signs of heat exhaustion — dizziness, heavy sweating, nausea or headache — and move somewhere cool if you feel unwell.
People with respiratory problems should also take care while African dust is in the air, limiting strenuous exercise outdoors.
