Real Mallorca lost 3–0 to Barcelona at the Camp Nou, but made the league leaders work hard for the first half before the home side’s quality told.
A missed chance
Mallorca came with a clear plan to defend compactly and break when possible, and they made the opening stages uncomfortable for Barcelona. Their best chance came in the 17th minute, when Jan Virgili — a former Barcelona youth player — delivered a cross that Vedat Muriqi could not direct on target.
Lewandowski breaks through
Barcelona eventually took the lead when Marcus Rashford’s shot was blocked, the ball fell to Dani Olmo, and Robert Lewandowski pounced on the rebound to beat goalkeeper Leo Román.
Yamal and Bernal
On the hour, Lamine Yamal struck from around 25 yards into the bottom corner, a goal that effectively settled the match. Seven minutes from time, substitute Marc Bernal ran into the area, sent Pablo Maffeo to the ground with a feint and finished at the near post.
What it means
The win moved Barcelona four points clear at the top of LaLiga. For Mallorca, the defeat was expected against a team in such form, and there were positives in the organisation and commitment shown, especially before the break.
The bigger concern is the league table. Mallorca’s priority was always the matches against rivals in the lower half, and performances like this one — competitive but without a goal threat once behind — underline the need to be more clinical in front of goal.
The former Barça players
The match had an extra edge for several Mallorca players with Barcelona connections, including Virgili, whose loan deal included conditions for his former club, and Pablo Torre, both of whom came through the Catalan club’s system.
