Mallorca has its first German football club. FC Germania Mallorca announced on Monday that it will “officially take part in the Spanish league from September”, with the aim of becoming a lasting presence in Spanish football, both on the pitch and online.
The coach
Former Bundesliga player Thorsten Legat has been named head coach. During his playing career he turned out for VfL Bochum, Werder Bremen, Eintracht Frankfurt, VfB Stuttgart and Schalke 04, making 243 Bundesliga appearances and scoring 15 goals.
The founders
One of the co-founders is Aleks Petrovic, a fitness trainer and reality TV personality in Germany, who is helping to give the club a high public profile.
First signings
Among the first players announced is Daniele Buccolini, who has more than a million followers across his social media channels, bringing the project instant visibility.
Strong start online
The club’s social media presence has grown quickly. In its first 17 days, its Instagram account gained more than 22,500 followers and reached over ten million people.
The club’s kit will be supplied by Jako, a sportswear company based in Baden-Württemberg.
Starting at the bottom
As a new club, Germania Mallorca will start in the lowest regional division of the Balearic Football Federation, where teams play on municipal pitches in front of small crowds. The founders’ long-term ambition is far bigger — to climb through the Spanish league system — and they hope that combining German football experience with a strong media strategy will help them stand out.
Mallorca has a large and long-established German community, and the club hopes to draw support both from residents and from the millions of German visitors who come to the island every year.
