Mallorca remains one of the favourite summer destinations for German holidaymakers, according to the travel group Tui, which presented its summer booking trends at a press conference in Berlin.
The ranking
Among Tui Germany’s customers, Mallorca is the second most popular destination this summer, behind Antalya in Turkey. The Greek islands of Crete, Rhodes and Kos complete the top five.
Spain as a whole remains the most popular country for Tui’s German customers. Within Spain, Andalusia is gaining ground, with the area around Jerez showing the biggest growth in bookings.
The rise of last-minute bookings
With high prices and a calmer geopolitical situation in the Middle East, more travellers are booking at the last minute. Tui says discounts of up to 40% are available for some late bookings to Mallorca and Ibiza.
According to the head of Tui Germany, Benjamin Jacobi, planning well ahead and booking on impulse have never been closer in popularity. The company’s message for the high season is that holidays are secure and there are still plenty of options available.
What it means for Mallorca
Germany is one of Mallorca’s two main source markets, alongside the United Kingdom, and German visitors are particularly important in spring and autumn. A strong position in Tui’s ranking is good news for hoteliers, although the growth of last-minute discounts also reflects a market in which prices have risen sharply and some customers are waiting for deals.
The debate at home
The figures come at a time of intense debate in Mallorca over tourist numbers, housing and the pressure of tourism on residents and services. The Balearic government’s strategy is to attract higher-spending visitors and spread tourism across the year rather than increase numbers in the peak months — a goal that sits uneasily with discounted last-minute packages in high season.
Tips for travellers
- Being flexible on dates and destinations can unlock better prices.
- Compare package and independent options.
- Check cancellation conditions before booking.
- Consider travelling in spring or autumn, when the island is quieter and often cheaper.
