Àlex Suárez, one of the leading Menorcan basketball players of his generation, has announced his retirement at the age of 32.
The announcement
Suárez made the announcement on social media, writing that “the adventure of the little orange ball is over”. He had been without a club during the 2025–26 season after a period affected by physical problems.
A career at the top
The forward from Maó made his debut in the ACB, Spain’s top basketball league, as a teenager with Menorca Bàsquet, and went on to spend 12 seasons in the competition.
His career took him to several clubs, including Real Madrid, Iberostar Tenerife, Monbus Obradoiro and, most recently, Real Betis. Over the years he established himself as a reliable, intelligent player, valued for his versatility, his understanding of team systems and his ability to play several positions.
He was also called up to the Spanish national team for qualifying windows.
A Menorcan in the elite
Suárez came through the youth system in Menorca at a time when the island had a team in the ACB, and his career became an example for young players on the island. In a recent interview, he said it was always exciting to think about the possibility of playing for his island’s team — a dream that, in the end, did not materialise.
Tributes
His retirement prompted messages from former team-mates, coaches and clubs, recalling his professionalism and commitment.
What next
Suárez has not yet said what he plans to do next, but his experience and knowledge of the game make him a natural candidate for a future role in coaching or club management.
For Menorcan basketball, which has produced a number of professional players despite the island’s small size, his retirement marks the end of a significant chapter — and a reminder of how far a player from the island can go.
