Aldi is bringing a little of Formentera to the dinner table this summer with a new tableware collection inspired by the smallest of the Balearic Islands.
The range goes on sale in its Spanish stores from Saturday 4 July, in limited quantities.
The dinner set
The centrepiece is a 12-piece stoneware set in turquoise glazes, with irregular, wave-like edges meant to evoke the sea around the island. It contains:
- four dinner plates (26 cm);
- four soup plates (21 cm);
- four dessert plates (20 cm).
The full set costs €29.99, which Aldi says is 43% below its usual price. The plates are also sold in pairs: dinner or soup plates at €6.99 a pair, and dessert plates at €4.99 a pair, so shoppers can buy only what they need or replace breakages.
Glasses and accessories
To go with the plates, the collection includes a pack of six coloured glass tumblers in blues and greens, each holding 47.5 cl, for €7.99. There is also a selection of natural-fibre items — woven placemats, baskets and small table accessories — at €2.50 each.
Why stoneware
Stoneware is a ceramic fired at very high temperatures, typically 1,200–1,300°C. That makes it dense and less porous than ordinary earthenware, so it resists chipping, staining and sudden changes in temperature better. It has a slightly rustic finish compared with porcelain and is usually safe in the dishwasher and microwave, which makes it practical for everyday use and for eating outdoors.
Availability
As with all of Aldi’s weekly non-food offers, the Formentera range is available only while stocks last and the company does not guarantee a restock. The full sets, in particular, tend to sell out quickly.
