Maó city council has opened the call for entries for this year’s Ciutat de Maó Prize, which in even-numbered years is dedicated to sculpture.
The prizes
- Main prize: €3,500 and an individual exhibition in one of the city’s municipal exhibition spaces.
- Young artist mention: €1,000 for an artist under 35, with the possibility of an exhibition.
Who can enter
The competition is open to artists living in Menorca. Works must be original, must not have been entered in previous editions of the prize and must not have won awards elsewhere.
The rules
- Maximum size: 170 cm high × 70 cm wide × 70 cm deep.
- Deadline: 24 July.
- Where: works must be delivered to the council’s culture department, with the entry form and a brief description including title and materials.
Alternating disciplines
The prize alternates each year between sculpture and painting. In 2024, the sculpture prize went to Anna Gutiérrez Moll for Alpinista; she had already won the under-35 mention in 2021. The young artist mention was previously won by Clàudia García Pons for Ona negra.
Last year’s painting prize was shared between Enric Servera and Rafael Timoner.
Why it matters
Municipal prizes like this are an important part of Menorca’s cultural life. They offer local artists financial support, visibility and the chance to exhibit in public spaces, and the young artist mention gives emerging creators an early opportunity to have their work recognised. Over the years, the Ciutat de Maó prize has helped to build up the city’s municipal art collection.
For applicants
Artists considering entering should check the full rules published by the council, prepare their work and documentation in advance, and plan the transport of their piece — especially large sculptures — well before the deadline.
