The 38th Eivissa Jazz International Festival, from 1 to 5 September, will strengthen its international profile with a closing night devoted to the bass, featuring the American bassist and singer Tonina Saputo and the Brazilian virtuoso Michael Pipoquinha.
The headliners
Tonina Saputo is a Californian double bassist, composer and singer whose music combines jazz with classical, Latin and African influences. Often compared to Esperanza Spalding, she treats jazz as an open language that crosses genres.
Michael Pipoquinha began his professional career at the age of 11 and has become one of the most acclaimed bassists in Brazil. His playing moves between jazz, soul, funk and world music, and he has performed with Djavan, Gilberto Gil and Ivan Lins.
Both will play on 5 September at the Santa Llúcia bastion in Dalt Vila.
The rest of the programme
The festival begins on 1 September on the Passeig de Vara de Rey, moves to Reina Sofía park on 2 September, and then settles on the Santa Llúcia bastion for its final three nights. The line-up combines local musicians, such as the Big Band Ibiza City and guitarist Antoni Marí, with international guests including the New Zealand saxophonist Nathan Haines and pianist Abe Rábade’s Eivissa Jazz Experience.
Free nights
The first three nights, from 1 to 3 September, are free. Tickets for the remaining concerts on the bastion are available through the festival’s website.
“An unmissable date”
Carmen Domínguez, Ibiza town council’s culture councillor, described the festival as an unmissable date on the island’s calendar, highlighting its growing international reputation while keeping a strong local character.
Why the setting matters
Concerts on the walls of Dalt Vila, part of Ibiza’s UNESCO World Heritage site, with views over the port and the town, are one of the festival’s great attractions. Held at the beginning of September, as the summer crowds begin to ease, Eivissa Jazz offers a different side of Ibiza — and a chance to hear world-class musicians in an intimate open-air setting.
