Danish actress Trine Dyrholm to receive Masters of Cinema award at Atlàntida festival

The star of Festen, The Commune and Queen of Hearts will be honoured at La Misericòrdia in Palma on 28 July.

The Danish actress and singer Trine Dyrholm will receive one of the Masters of Cinema awards at this year’s Atlàntida Mallorca Film Fest, the festival has announced.

The award

The award will be presented on Tuesday 28 July at La Misericòrdia in Palma. After the ceremony, Dyrholm will give a public masterclass about her career.

A career in European cinema

Born in Odense in 1972, Dyrholm began her career as a singer as a teenager before turning to acting. She has become one of the most recognised faces of Danish and European cinema.

Festen (1998). Her international breakthrough came with Thomas Vinterberg’s Festen (The Celebration), the first film of the Dogme 95 movement.

The Commune (2016). She worked with Vinterberg again in The Commune, which won her the Silver Bear for best actress at the Berlin film festival.

In a Better World (2010). She appeared in Susanne Bier’s In a Better World, which won the Oscar for best foreign-language film.

Queen of Hearts (2019). In May el-Toukhy’s drama, she played a lawyer whose affair with her teenage stepson upends her family. The film won the World Cinema audience award at Sundance and earned her wide acclaim.

More recently she has appeared in Magnus von Horn’s The Girl with the Needle and in Benedikt Erlingsson’s dark comedy series The Danish Woman.

Range

Dyrholm is known for taking on difficult, morally complex characters, moving between intimate dramas, comedy and music. The festival described her as one of the great performers of contemporary European cinema.

The festival

The Atlàntida Mallorca Film Fest runs in Palma from 24 July to 2 August, combining screenings and events on the island with an online programme. Other Masters of Cinema awards this year go to Gael García Bernal and the composer Alexandre Desplat.
