The Atlàntida Mallorca Film Fest will screen a new extended version of the horror film Backrooms on 1 August at 10pm at La Misericòrdia in Palma, as part of the festival’s Trends section.
Sixteen new minutes
The extended cut adds 16 minutes that were not included in the cinema release. The organisers stress that this is not a collection of deleted scenes, but new material designed to expand the Backrooms universe, deepen its mysteries and give fans more clues to analyse.
A horror hit
Despite a relatively short run in cinemas, Backrooms drew around 938,000 spectators in Spain, making it the most-watched horror film of the year in the country and one of the most successful genre releases of recent years.
From YouTube to the big screen
The film is directed by Kane Parsons, a young American filmmaker who became famous in 2022 with a series of short horror videos on YouTube inspired by the “Backrooms” — an internet legend about an endless maze of empty, yellow-lit office rooms that people can supposedly fall into by accident. His videos attracted tens of millions of views and led to a feature film produced by A24.
What to expect
The festival says the screening is a unique opportunity to see the new edit on the big screen. Fans can expect:
- new material expanding the story’s lore;
- visual and sound details likely to fuel new theories;
- a reminder that there are still unexplored corners of the Backrooms world.
The festival
The Atlàntida Mallorca Film Fest runs in Palma from 24 July to 2 August, combining screenings at venues such as La Misericòrdia with an online programme. Its Trends section focuses on films and phenomena that are shaping contemporary audiovisual culture — a fitting home for a film born on the internet.
