Spain and other Schengen countries are under growing pressure to ease the checks required by the EU’s new Entry/Exit System (EES), as airlines warn that queues at passport control could become much worse in July and August.
Long queues
The EES, which records the fingerprints and facial images of non-EU travellers, has caused long queues at some European airports. British travellers have been among the most affected, and some airlines are advising passengers to arrive at the airport three hours before their flight.
Why delays are getting worse
- Staff shortages: many border posts do not have enough officers to process passengers quickly.
- Technical problems: automated gates and computer systems that should speed things up are not always working properly.
- Low use of the pre-registration app: the app that allows travellers to submit some of their details in advance is barely being used in most Schengen countries.
The summer outlook
The industry warns that, if nothing changes, waiting times could reach four hours or more at peak times in July and August, causing missed flights and stress for travellers.
Some relief
Some countries have found ways to speed things up. In France, for example, British travellers who are already registered in the EES or hold a French residence card can use the PARAFE automatic gates at some airports.
What the industry is asking for
The airports association ACI Europe, Airlines for Europe and the International Air Transport Association (IATA) have written to the European Commissioner for internal affairs asking the EU to:
- keep the option to suspend or ease EES checks until at least the end of October 2026;
- tackle staff shortages and improve technology at border posts;
- promote wider use of the pre-registration app.
For travellers to and from the Balearics
Palma airport, one of the busiest in Spain for British travellers, is among those at risk of long queues. Passengers should check their airline’s advice, arrive early, have their passport ready and follow any instructions about pre-registration. Returning home from Mallorca can also involve EES checks on exit, so allow extra time at the end of the holiday too.
