Cala Major in Palma wins back its Blue Flag

The beach beside the Marivent palace is one of 33 in the Balearics to fly the international eco-label this year.

Cala Major, one of Palma’s busiest beaches, has regained its Blue Flag for 2026, joining the list of 33 Balearic beaches recognised this year for water quality, safety and environmental management.

What the Blue Flag means

The Blue Flag is an international award run by the Foundation for Environmental Education. To earn it, a beach must meet more than 30 criteria, grouped into:

  • water quality;
  • environmental management;
  • safety and lifeguard services;
  • accessibility;
  • environmental information and education.

The award is granted for one year at a time, and a beach can lose its flag — even during the season — if it stops meeting the standards.

A return to the list

Cala Major had been absent from the list, and its return reflects work by Palma city council and the teams that manage the beach to meet all the requirements again, from water sampling to facilities and safety cover.

The beach

Cala Major lies about four kilometres west of the city centre, below the Marivent palace, the Spanish royal family’s summer residence, and close to the Fundació Pilar i Joan Miró, where the artist lived and worked in his later years.

The neighbourhood combines hotels, bars and shops with residential streets, and the beach is popular with both locals and visitors.

Sand, shelter and shallow water

The beach was enlarged with imported sand in the late 20th century, and a small breakwater divides it into two sections; the breakwater itself is a popular spot for sunbathing. The cliffs below Marivent shelter the beach from easterly winds, while the hotels along the seafront block winds from the west. The sandy seabed slopes gently, and anchoring is prohibited in the waters off the royal residence.

Getting there

City buses stop a short walk from the beach, and there is paid street parking in the area during the busiest periods. Arriving by bus is the easier option in summer, when parking fills up early.

Why it matters

For visitors, a Blue Flag is a quick sign that a beach is clean, safe and well managed. For the city, it is also a commitment: the council will need to keep meeting the criteria if Cala Major is to keep flying the flag in the years to come.
