Mojang’s latest Minecraft Live presentation brought news on the spin-off sequel Minecraft Dungeons II and on the next free updates for the main game.
Minecraft Dungeons II
Mojang Studios and co-developer Double Eleven confirmed that Minecraft Dungeons II is on schedule for an autumn 2026 release on:
- Xbox Series X|S and PC (Xbox app and Steam);
- PlayStation 5;
- Nintendo Switch and Switch 2.
It will be available on Game Pass from launch.
The first gameplay footage shows that the formula of the original is intact: fast dungeon-crawling action, plenty of loot and co-operative play for up to four players. The sequel promises bigger battles, new biomes, new enemies and more equipment. One of the enemies revealed is a twisted version of the Warden, the fearsome creature from the main game, which will require good teamwork to defeat.
Chaos Cubed: the next free update
After March’s Tiny Takeover update, Minecraft’s next free content drop, Chaos Cubed, arrives on 16 June. It adds:
- Sulfur caves, a new underground biome in reds and yellows, with bubbling sulfur springs and dangerous gases that require protection;
- new blocks, including cinnabar and sulfur, for building and crafting;
- the Sulfur Cube, a new mob that absorbs blocks around it and changes its behaviour depending on what it has absorbed.
A glimpse of autumn
Mojang also teased a further update for later in the year, showing a speckled forest with poplars, red bushes and abandoned campsites. No name has been announced, but more details are expected in the coming months.
Still growing
More than 15 years after its release, Minecraft remains one of the best-selling and most-played games in the world, and its regular free updates are a big part of why. With a new Dungeons game on the way and the success of the Minecraft film, the franchise is in one of its busiest periods.
