"Matres": Campi Qui Puig's family show about life and motherhood comes to the Teatre des Born

The Catalan company's wordless production follows three generations of women through the eyes of a child in rural Catalonia.

The Catalan theatre company Campi Qui Puig brings Matres, a show about life and motherhood, to the Teatre des Born in Ciutadella on Saturday at 7.30pm.

The company

Campi Qui Puig has built a strong reputation for theatre aimed at families that appeals to adults and children alike. It last performed at the Teatre des Born in 2021, with Camí a l’escola.

The story

Matres, recommended for ages six and up, explores universal themes through the eyes of a child growing up in rural Catalonia. The story revolves around three generations of women — a mother, an aunt and a grandmother — who shape the child’s understanding of motherhood, childhood, loss and resilience.

The theatre describes it as more than children’s theatre: a deeply human story that opens a dialogue between generations, balancing humour and tenderness so that families can talk about complex experiences together.

How it is told

The production uses:

  • physical theatre;
  • puppets;
  • a simple set that puts the focus on emotion.

The show runs for about an hour and relies on movement and images rather than dialogue, so it can be enjoyed by audiences of any language.

Practical information

  • Venue: Teatre des Born, Ciutadella
  • Time: 7.30pm
  • Age: recommended for six and over
  • Tickets: from the theatre’s box office and website

Family theatre in Menorca

The Teatre des Born, one of Menorca’s main cultural venues, has a regular programme of family shows during the winter season, bringing leading companies from the mainland to the island. Productions like Matres, which tackle real emotions without condescending to children, are a reminder that family theatre can be among the most moving on any stage.
