Former football star Luis Figo has spent a few days on holiday in Menorca with his wife, the Swedish model Helen Svedin, sharing images of the trip with his followers on social media.
A football legend
Figo, one of the great Portuguese players, starred for Sporting, Barcelona, Real Madrid and Inter Milan, won the Ballon d’Or in 2000 and was named FIFA World Player of the Year in 2001. His controversial move from Barcelona to Real Madrid in 2000 remains one of the most famous transfers in football history. Since retiring, he has focused on business and charity work.
Where they stayed
The couple stayed at Torralbenc, a rural hotel in the municipality of Alaior, set in a restored farmhouse among vineyards and stone walls, between the countryside and the south coast.
What they did
- Art: they visited the Galería Cayón in Maó, which was showing an exhibition of works by Antoni Tàpies.
- Fornells: they visited the fishing village on the north coast, known for its harbour and whitewashed houses.
- Cales Coves: they explored this ravine on the south coast, famous for its clear water and the prehistoric burial caves carved into the cliffs.
- Lobster: they tried Menorca’s famous lobster, a speciality of the island, often served as caldereta, a rich stew.
Menorca’s appeal
Menorca has become a favourite destination for well-known figures looking for privacy, with its unspoiled beaches, quiet towns and relaxed pace of life. Unlike Ibiza or parts of Mallorca, the island has kept a lower profile, and its status as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve has helped to protect much of its landscape.
The posts of the former footballer drew many comments from fans praising the island’s scenery — a free and welcome promotion for Menorca’s tourism.
