Gemma Triay’s remarkable streak of finals has come to an end. The padel player from Alaior, born in 1992, and her Argentine partner Delfi Brea had reached the final of every tournament they entered for almost eight months — 13 in a row — winning titles at the P2 events in Gijón and Cancún and the Major in Rome.
Valencia
The run was broken at the P1 in Valencia, where Triay and Brea met Ari Sánchez and Andrea Ustero. The match went to a third set, but the Catalan pair took control at the decisive moment and won.
Valladolid
Two weeks later, at the P2 in Valladolid, they met Sánchez and Ustero again, and once more came out on the losing side, this time in straight sets, the second decided by a tie-break.
Bordeaux
Looking to recover, Triay and Brea travelled to the P2 in Bordeaux, a tournament they had won the previous summer. They reached the final, where they faced Tamara Icardo and Claudia Jensen, one of the top five pairs in the world.
The Menorcan-Argentine pair took the first set 6–3, but Icardo and Jensen hit back strongly, winning the next two sets 6–1, 6–1 to take the title.
Málaga next
Despite three consecutive setbacks, Triay and Brea remain the world’s number one pair. Their next goal is the P1 in Málaga, where they will try to return to winning ways.
A champion from Menorca
Triay has been one of the outstanding players in women’s padel for a decade, reaching world number one with different partners, and is a source of great pride in Menorca. Even the best streaks come to an end, and the next few tournaments will show whether the pair can reassert their dominance — with Sánchez and Ustero having established themselves as their main rivals.
