The Atlàntida Mallorca Film Fest returns to Palma from 24 July to 2 August for its 16th edition, which the organisers describe as the most ambitious yet: 165 titles, half of them premieres in Spain, and more than 300 guests.
Masters of Cinema awards
- Alexandre Desplat, the Oscar-winning French composer, will be honoured at the closing gala on 2 August.
- Gael García Bernal, the Mexican actor, producer and director, will receive his award on 1 August, marking 25 years since Y tu mamá también.
- Trine Dyrholm, the Danish actress and singer, will be honoured on 28 July at La Misericòrdia.
A tribute to a poster painter
The Illa de Cinema award goes to Rafael Ruiz, the Mallorcan artist who spent nearly 50 years hand-painting the giant film posters that hung outside Palma’s cinemas, earning him the nickname “the man who painted films”.
Guests
Other guests include Javier Bardem, Victoria Luengo, director Rodrigo Sorogoyen, Fernando Trueba, Jaime Chávarri, Carlos Bardem, Judith Godrèche, the multidisciplinary artist Soyunapringada and the American filmmakers David Lowery and John Wilson.
Opening and closing films
The festival opens with Forastera, a Mallorcan production, and closes with Sorogoyen’s El ser querido.
The competition
Fourteen films compete in the official section, eight of them Spanish premieres. They include:
- Erupcja (Pete Ohs);
- the world premiere of A fuego (Estel Díaz);
- Bad Beast (Bárbara Farré);
- Lionel (Carlos Saiz), winner at the Transilvania festival;
- The Last Resort (Maria Sødahl);

Atlàntida combines screenings in Palma with an online platform, and in recent years has become one of the most important summer film events in Spain.
