Filmmaker David Marqués returns to Ibiza to present his new comedy, Haciendo amigos (Making friends), on Friday 10 July at Cine Regio in Sant Antoni, coinciding with its release in cinemas.
The premiere
The evening starts at 6.30pm with a photocall and red carpet, followed by the screening and a conversation with the audience. The timing was chosen with football in mind: the organisers wanted the audience to be able to watch Spain’s World Cup match at 9pm afterwards.
Marqués will be joined by Antonio Resines, one of the film’s stars, who the director jokes will be the first to leave for the match.
The story
Two thieves, played by Antonio Resines and Quim Gutiérrez, rob a jewellery shop and try to escape. On the run, they meet the director of a theatre group of people with disabilities, played by Megan Montaner, who mistakes one of them for a new member of the company. The thieves climb aboard the group’s bus, thinking it is the perfect getaway — but the journey leads to unexpected friendships and plenty of comic situations.
Not another “Campeones”
Marqués describes the film as an out-and-out comedy with emotional moments. Although some will compare it with Campeones, the 2018 hit about a basketball team of players with intellectual disabilities, he says Haciendo amigos focuses more on personal relationships than on disability and integration.
The first reactions
The film had a preview in Madrid on 4 July, and the director says the audience left happy and stayed talking with the team for more than an hour afterwards.
Screenings
After the premiere, the film will be shown at Cine Regio from Saturday 11 to Thursday 16 July, with two daily screenings at 6pm and 8.30pm.
Ibiza and cinema
Marqués has a close relationship with Ibiza and has presented several of his films on the island. Cine Regio, one of Ibiza’s historic cinemas, has become a regular venue for these local premieres, giving island audiences the chance to meet directors and actors in person.
The director’s promise to audiences is simple: a good time and leaving the cinema with a smile.
