Astro Bot, the PlayStation 5 platformer from Team Asobi, has become one of Sony’s most successful exclusives of the generation, with estimated revenue of around $250 million, according to the analytics firm Alinea Analytics.
The numbers
Sony itself has not published updated sales figures since announcing that the game had sold 1.5 million copies in its first nine weeks. Alinea Analytics now estimates total sales at around 4.3 million copies, generating about $250 million.
The game continues to sell steadily: Alinea estimates more than 600,000 copies sold in the past year, worth around $33 million, and about 100,000 copies a month at present — almost two years after release.
Game of the Year
Astro Bot won Game of the Year at The Game Awards in 2024, a major boost to its profile. Team Asobi followed the win with several free updates adding new levels and challenges.
A profitable hit
Industry estimates suggest the game’s total budget, including marketing, was below $100 million. If so, the revenue figures make it a clearly profitable project for Sony — and a reminder that a well-made game does not need a blockbuster budget.
Reaching new players
Astro Bot’s charm and accessibility have attracted players who might traditionally choose Nintendo, offering Sony a family-friendly flagship at a time when much of the PlayStation catalogue is aimed at older players.
What next for Team Asobi
Team Asobi, based in Tokyo, has been advertising several new jobs, including a 3D environment artist role focused on creating fun, interactive spaces. The hiring has fuelled speculation about a sequel or another major project, although Sony has announced nothing.
For players, Astro Bot remains one of the easiest recommendations on PS5: a joyful, inventive platformer that celebrates the history of PlayStation.
